On - going Furniture Conservation at the Fabulous Fox

The mezzanine ladies lounge, 1929

The Restoration Department is pleased to announce that we have completed Phase I of our Furniture Conservation Project.  Hand- selected by the wife of movie mogul William Fox and manufactured in 1929 by Ketcham and Rothschild, our collection of original furniture has withstood a good deal wear and tear over the years yet is much the way it would have appeared in 1929.  Though the furniture collection is now in fair condition, a thorough condition appraisal indicated that a long-term plan for repair was essential to the preservation of the collection.

Respected furniture conservator Victoria Jefferies was chosen to conduct the survey and repairs.  Victoria and her husband Thom Gentle have worked on many important historic collections: The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, The Fallingwater collection by Frank Lloyd Wright, The Swan House at the Atlanta History Center, as well as The Diplomatic Reception Rooms for The United States Department of State, just to mention a few.

Of the five pieces selected this year for conservation, the two we are the most proud of are the “King Tut” chairs found in the mezzanine Ladies Lounge.  These chairs had sustained considerable damage over the years as well as abraded and vandalized finishes and gilding.

Before treatment

Before treatment, abraded finish and surface vandalism is apparent

Thom and Victoria carefully performed cleaning and solubility tests to formulate a treatment protocol, cleaned the surfaces of the two chairs, performed all necessary structural repairs, inpainted and ingilt where necessary and finally toned the finishes to be in keeping with the
rest of the collection and to appear historically accurate.

We are very happy with the treatment results and hope to continue to work with Ms. Jefferies and Mr. Gentle as we address the long-term needs of our furniture collection.

The Restoration Department is pleased to announce that we are embarking on a thorough condition survey to be followed by a five-year maintenance and repair plan of the entire collection of Fox historic furniture. Hand selected by the wife of movie mogul William Fox and manufactured in 1929 by Ketcham and Rothschild, our collection of original furniture has withstood a good deal of wear and tear over the years yet is much the way it would have appeared in 1929. Though the furniture collection is now in fair condition, we felt that an educated condition appraisal and long-term plan for repair was essential to the preservation of the collection.

Respected furniture conservator Victoria Jefferies was chosen to conduct the survey and repairs. Victoria and her husband Thom Gentle have worked on many important historic collections: The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, The Fallingwater collection by Frank Lloyd Wright, The Swan House
at the Atlanta History Center, as well as The Diplomatic Reception Rooms for The United States Department of State, just to mention a few.

It is our hope that by careful assessment and furniture repair planning we will be better able to preserve this wonderful aspect of Fox history for future generations to enjoy.
